spend quality time together?

St.
Paul made the statement, “Bodily exercise profited little...”
He
was making a point that spiritual activity is far more
important than physical exercise, that the eternal is more
beneficial than the temporal. And I agree with his
proposition.
When
I was a boy, our Lutheran Church almost equated sports with
sin. We were raised on the old Protestant work ethic: work
hard, attend church, respect your neighbours and if you have
any time left you can play. And play we did!
But
not like today, when sports is glorified and the Boob Tube is
a little altar, when little gods on skates, swinging hockey
sticks, earn 100 times more than what they are worth!
MAKING
MILLIONS FOR FIGHTING
Or
two gods in a ring with boxing gloves and mouthpieces, beating
each other ferociously - and earning millions of dollars for a
few minutes.
I
would be the first to say that it’s gone too far. Football,
hockey and boxing gladiators earn a criminally high wage -
just to make us happy. We are a pleasure-mad generation, for
sure.
The
medical doctors with their exalted wages at least save lives
and lawyers do a lot of good at times, as do school teachers
and business entrepreneurs.
I am
not throwing stones: I enjoy a good hockey game. I’m an avid
Edmonton Oilers hockey fan, and think Edmonton should be proud
of our athletes and the Great Wayne Gretzky.
Any
man with two cents worth of grey matter between the ears,
however, would have to agree with me that the sports
profession is out of control, monetarily.
This
is true especially when you think of how our amateur and
Olympic athletes work so hard, so well, for so little.
Having
said that, let me get to the beef of my message.
When
was the last time you played with your son, Dad? Mom? When did
you last play a game of catch, take a family hike or just a
walk around the block?
I
still like to strap on my skates and pick up a hockey stick
occasionally. What a thrill to play with my sons Ken &
John.
Really
- the family that plays together, stays together.
It’s
just as true as the old adage about families praying
together.
Article

with dren need you to love and guide them, child needs to feel
loved.
IMPROVE FAMILY
RELATIONSHIPS
If we
as parents and grandparents learn to spend time with our
families instead of sitting in the beer parlors and cocktail
lounges or hanging around the bingo halls, we’d see an
improvement in our relationship with our families.
The
kids would also improve in attitude; caring, sharing and
general all around mental health, as well as better grades in
school.....And we’d be in better shape.
Let’s
get out to the ball diamonds, zoos, and city parks with our
children.....And don’t forget to pray together too.
