CANADA'S  Constitutional and Moral Crisis by:  Sya Strydhorst

Today we are in more than a constitutional crisis. Our national culture has become one of vilification of Christianity. We need only to look at the recent federal election, in which the Liberals did everything in their power to vilify their biggest opponents, Stephen Harper and the
 new Conservative Party of Canada (CPC)

Harper's faith, though he has never publicly stated it, is presumed to be Christianity; therefore he and his party are suspected of bigotry, hatemongering, etc. - this, in spite of the CPC making every effort to distance themselves from moral conservatism, and only promoting economic conservatism

The CPC has even gone a step further, and state within their founding principles: A belief in loyalty to a sovereign and united Canada governed IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONSTITUTION OF CANADA , THE SUPREMACY OF DEMOCRATIC PARLIAMENTARY INSTITUTIONS and the rule of law.

Note that where the Preamble to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in Canada's Constitution affirms "the supremacy of God and the rule of law"; but God has been replaced in the CPC's Statement of Principles by "democratic parliamentary institutions" - but still the suspicion of the dreaded Christian ethic continues to haunt them.

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper has stated that all disenfranchised moral conservatives are welcome within the CPC. This, to me, is also troubling: are all philosophical positions to be considered equal? Maybe moral conservatives will gain some political sway. God may choose to bless their service there; but then again, He may not.

Let us pray that He will - but I, for one, am troubled by the CPC's pragmatic (rather than principled) tactics, where democracy rather than the Divine Being is given pre-eminence.

   Theologian A. A. Hodges, exhorting Christians in his day, stated it this way: "Since the kingdom of God on earth is not confined to the mere ecclesiastical sphere (churches), but it aims at absolute universality and extends its supreme reign over every department of human life, it follows that it is the duty of every loyal subject to endeavour to bring all human society, social and political, as well as ecclesiastical, into obedience to its law of righteousness. 

"It is our duty as far as it lies in our power to immediately organize human society and all its institutions and organs upon a distinctively Christian basis, not so Christians can be tolerated, not so that we can have the Bible taught in public schools as one position along side of evolution, but that God's righteous rule be recognized and established.   We want it to be the rule of life. Indifference or impartiality between
the law of the kingdom of God and the law of the world or its prince, the devil, is utter treason to the King of Righteousness.

"The Bible, the great statute book of the Kingdom, explicitly lays down principles which when candidly applied will regulate the action of every human being in all relations. There may be no compromise. The King said with regard to all descriptions of moral agents of all spheres of activity 'he that is not with me is against me.' There is no middle ground."

The Apostle Paul instructed Timothy: "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16 and 17)  Acknowledging God's sovereignty is pivotal in the preservation of liberty. God's law embodies liberty. In other words, there is no liberty apart from the Gospel of Christ.

Dutch theologian and politician Abraham Kuyper succinctly explained it as follows "... the sovereignty of God holds good for all the world, is true for all nations, and is a force in all authority which man exercises over man. It is, therefore, a political face, which may be summarily expressed in three theses:

1. God alone possesses sovereign rights, because He is the Creator, Ruler, and controls all the destinations. 

2. God has ordained human government in His Name. The civil authorities are His ministers to maintain justice
and create an environment of peace.

3. In whatever man exercises this authority, he may only exercise it within the bounds which God allows. Man's authority is limited by the Word of God."

      Canada is in a crisis greater than with respect only to the Constitution. As the Christian Heritage Party, we are committed to reinstate "the supremacy of God and the rule of law." And even if a just and holy God delivers us over to the rule of tyranny, we dare not surrender to the tyrant. We must oppose the godless rule.
